PLUS-ONE Projects will present a solo presentation by Dutch artist Daan Couzijn at Art Brussel 2025

  • In Daan Couzijn’s artistic practice, both the desire for and the questioning of authenticity are central. He explores the tension between the romantic notion that artists should strive for authenticity and the postmodern conviction that everything builds upon what has already been created. By re-using and fragmenting existing images and objects, Couzijn investigates how visual conventions — the unwritten rules that shape our perception — not only define authenticity but also determine value.

Couzijn works conceptually and employs various media, ranging from sculpture and painting to video and installation. His work is fueled by a broader reflection on visual culture(s) and the philosophical theories that emerge from it — particularly regarding how images are produced, reproduced, and interpreted. One example is the idea that images do not have a fixed origin but circulate within a network of references. Recently, he used this principle as a starting point for the series of oil paintings, 'Thinking of Holland,' in which he collaborated with computer technologies and a professional forger to challenge the way in which the Dutch landscape is anchored in certain collective memories as a nationalist symbol.

Daans most recent project, ‘Please Take Nothing But Memory’, – presented at Art Brussels 2025 – specifically examines the mechanisms by which society determines what is valuable and when something loses its meaning. These dynamics become visible in auction houses, where valuation is in constant flux. Here, possessions change hands due to inheritance, financial necessity, or shifting tastes. At the same time, auction houses are spaces where buyers re-evaluate historical objects and speculate on their future market value.

For years, Couzijn has been collecting unique objects together with his friend Christian Herren, an art historian — from a birchwood astronomer’s chair from 1873 to a reliquary containing a bone fragment of a saint’s arm. What began as a shared passion for tracking down rare finds has evolved into a deep-rooted fascination with the stories these objects carry. The interest is not solely in their material beauty or rarity but, above all, in the traces of time and use embedded in each piece. Behind every object lies a history of ownership, loss, and rediscovery — a history that becomes tangible in auction houses.

Within this framework, Couzijn creates a series of new sculptural works that expose and undermine conventional mechanisms of valuation. Through auction houses, he collects antique objects and artworks that seem to have lost their value because they are sold at low prices. What fascinates Couzijn is how these objects can acquire new meaning through transformation.

By modifying them and reassembling fragments, they become detached from their original context. At the same time, echoes of their past remain visible, making the transformation tangible. What was considered ‘old’ or ‘worthless’ in the auction house gains a renewed presence — not through restoration, but through transformation.

Couzijn often associates authenticity with craftsmanship because it implies a direct, physical relationship between the maker and the material. For this reason, he deliberately chooses objects and works of art that have been created with artisanal mastery, as they embody a form of authenticity that he himself cannot achieve, but that he romanticizes. Through his artistic interventions, he aims to invite the viewer to approach these objects from a different perspective, hoping they will be reappreciated.

By integrating elements of their original form into new sculptural assemblages, Couzijn highlights the shifting valuation they have undergone over time.

For the modification of these objects, Couzijn developed a technique — deeply respectful of both the craftsmanship with which they were created and the field of restoration — that focuses on pigment migration.

By removing the varnish and accumulated grime from a historical painting, he creates the possibility to extract a superficial layer of pigment using chemical extraction or transfer techniques, absorbing it into another canvas. In this way, a fragment of the ‘aura’ of the original work is transferred. This artistic intervention pushes the original image to the edge of recognizability, causing the object to balance between decay and newly created value. This research is conducted in collaboration with NICAS (The Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art, and Science) and Agnes Brokerhof (a restoration expert at the Cultural Heritage Laboratory of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science). While restoration is typically aimed at preservation, Couzijn experiments with techniques that partially reverse that process — not to destroy, but to create space for a new, meaningful layering. The canvases into which the pigments have migrated are then mounted into antique objects he collected — such as a trumeau or a fireplace screen — embedding the extraction within a new, hybrid whole.

The manipulation of these objects makes the perception of value elusive, as the status of the works constantly shifts between different systems of valuation. They exist at the intersection of art and residual material, between heritage and waste. With the tension between reinterpretation and appropriation, they acquire a new status within the exhibition space: what was once discarded is temporarily recognized as an artwork. Their presentation in an artistic context initiates this shift, while the interventions of modification and assemblage influence the way they are perceived and interpreted. This reveals that value is not only a material attribute but, above all, a cultural construct.

Couzijn collects antique objects through auction houses in the locations where they are exhibited, creating a direct connection to local history while also serving as time capsules of that specific place. After the exhibition, these works will return to the auction houses, disrupting the stability of their newly acquired status. Within an artistic context, they are recognized as authentic artworks, but once they return to the auction, they lose their privileged position and become part of an undifferentiated mass of objects. Consequently, they may re-enter different levels of the valuation system — ranging from an auction catalog to a thrift store or flea market.

This process reveals how an object's appreciation is not inherent but is continuously shaped by the context in which it circulates, and the meaning attributed to it.

With special thanks to Anton Venhuizen.

  • PLUS-ONE Projects presents a solo presentation by Belgian artist Jasper Nollet.

Jasper Nollet (°1998) gazes impatiently toward the future, where humanity evolves into an interplanetary species. He explores the possibilities and challenges that this transition would bring, not only for our technological capabilities but also for our collective identity as a species. His starting point is a fascination with the ‘overview effect’—the profound sense of interconnectedness that astronauts experience when viewing Earth from space. Jasper investigates how this shift in perspective could transform our relationship with each other and the cosmos.

In his work, he combines archetypes from the past with futuristic forms and visual language. These elements engage in a dialogue with the cultural legacies we carry forward and the speculative future we are building. His work unfolds at the intersection of archaeology and sci-fi, where objects and ideas from the past collide with visions of a newly emerging future. By juxtaposing relics of human history with imagined technologies, he questions what we choose to preserve and what we are willing to leave behind. His practice invites viewers to consider how mythology, history, and progress intertwine in shaping our future narratives. Ultimately, Nollet’s work serves as both a reflection on human evolution and a speculative roadmap for the next chapter of our existence beyond Earth.

    Solo exhibition: Dittmar Viane

For his solo exhibition at Art Antwerp 2024, Dittmar Viane introduces a new series of works that blends elements of the past and present. His works remind us of the fleeting nature of the moment, as well as the immortality of art, which offers deeper insights into ourselves and the world around us.

Dittmar Viane’s work draws on the rich tradition of Early Netherlandish painting, blending its realist techniques with contemporary visual paradoxes. Influenced by masters like Dirk Bouts and Hans Memling, Viane employs oil paint and fine brushes to achieve delicate transitions and lifelike transparency through glazing. His meticulous use of subtle dark tones enhances depth and binds his color palette.

Viane’s paintings, such as Swallowtail (2024), The Forbidden Fruit, The Apple of Thorns (2024) and Eyed Hawk (2024) offer uncanny yet realistic, almost biological depictions that play with perspective, creating disorienting yet captivating visual experiences.

Viane’s works play with time, material, and meaning, using paint as a means to reveal different dimensions of existence. Humor is also a big part of his oeuvre, adding a playful yet thought-provoking layer to his art. Each painting seems imbued with an underlying energy that is both powerful and fragile, while the textures and colors are layered in a subtle interplay of light and shadow. The stillness in his compositions creates space for reflection, inviting the viewer not only to observe but also to contribute to the narrative unfolding before them.

At Art Antwerp 2024, Viane encourages us to contemplate transitions—between past and future, between inner and outer—and to pause time within the layers of his paintings.

Dittmar Viane was born in 1998 in Izegem, Belgium. He received both his BA and MA in Illustration from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent. Viane has exhibited across Belgium, including at Everyday Gallery (2022), Museum Hof van Busleyden (2023), Pizza Gallery (2023) and most recently, as part of the 9th Biennial of Painting, at mudel (Museum of Deinze and the Leie region) (2024). His work has also been exhibited in international fairs, such as Art Brussels, Untitled Art (Miami), Future Fair (New York) and Art Rotterdam. Viane lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.

  • ‘- re.SET ...’ (shaped) fat.canvas Solo booth Sergio De Beukelaer at Art Antwerp

The work of Sergio De Beukelaer looks simple but combines a variety of paradoxes. For example, De Beukelaer uses numerous codes of post-modernistic art from the 1960s and 1970s, such as abstraction, geometry , monochrome, and the “hard edge” technique. But he does so with an irony and playfulness that cannot be reconciled with the attitude of minimalists and fundamental painters. As part of this eclectic approach, classical-modern boundaries are pushed back, without there being any “post-modern” criticism of his predecessors from minimal-,pop-,op-,and concept art. Apparent contrasts, such as figuration and abstraction, flat and spatial, word and image, painting and sculpture, both contaminate and fertilise one another. In the concept of the “fat.canvas”, a three-dimensional painting, the artist leaves the field of classical painting and conquers the painting the space. The shapes, colours and dimensions of De Beukelaer’s works are tempting, but behind the power of these compact images, a surprising impact lurks on closer inspection.

    “Figuration vs Abstraction”

For the second year in a row, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde and PLUS-ONE Gallery present a collaborating booth at Art Brussels. “Figuration vs Abstraction”.

A title that sounds like a boxing match. Two galleries boxing and competing for attention, at an art fair where arthusiasts are looking for the new, what's next, the trends. Is it Figuration? Is it Abstraction? What's new? This discussion is of course completely irrelevant, as it is a battle between both galleries who actually work closely together, each with their own
    approach and individuality.

The presentation is about the irrelevance of style trends and competition. It celebrates the blurred line and the pleasure of looking back and forward at the same time, surrounded by artists who create individually in an open and connected world.

Antwan Horfee solo at Art On Paper

05.09.2018 - 09.09.2018

  • Location: Ravenstein hall , BOZAR, Brussels, Belgium

About: Antwan Horfee first gained recognition as an independent creative artist in Paris. Inspired by Avant-Garde art movements, he projects the action and performative aspect of his work outdoors into his gallery work, still using spray techniques for his abstracted and slightly distorted representations. He skilfully combines figurative and abstract elements, in works that are often critical about the contemporary art world and the art historical canon.

The often surreal characters in his works, which are dominated by abstract gestures, are signs of an age of diversity, noise, abundance, and uncertainty. His intense dynamics and colour palette are symptomatic of a time when the flow of (digital) images is extensive and fast. He allows coincidences to affect his works in order to create an individual, nuanced and contemporary visual language.

Recently, Antwan Horfee has also been working on animated movies. He makes a great amount of drawings by hand, which he then processes digitally. Inspired by old and contemporary animation, and by vintage Japanese anime movies, his films are dreamlike rhythmic flows of mesmerizing, pulsating movement. His imaginative style, which combines figuration and the abstract, literally comes to life. In addition, the animation is in itself a form of abstraction, when it distorts or deconstructs the already surreal characters of the story.

The animations are created by placing drawings on thin transparent plastic sheets on top of each other. In doing so, the artist creates a layered three-dimensionality. This technique is an extension of Horfee’s practice, of which drawing is the center and the basis, and in which he investigates ways to project drawing into the contemporary (art) climate. He often makes drawings not on paper, but on a transparent sheet of thick industrial plastic, wishing for the work to stand the test of time (whereas drawings on paper are more fragile) and allowing light and shadow to add coincidental layers to the work. In a similar way, his animations challenge the conventions of drawing by desacralizing the technique - one minute of animation requires ca. 2500 drawings and thus the primary focus is no longer the singular drawing but the movement and imagination it can produce.

Beni Bischof solo at Art Rotterdam

08.02.2018 - 11.02.2018

  • Booth: New Art Section

Location: Van Nellefabriek, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Beni Bischof is a contemporary Swiss artist, born in 1976, whose work spans a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, collage and site specific art installations. Known for his critical engagement with modern culture, Bischof's art often incorporates elements of absurdity, satire, and social commentary. His works address themes such as consumerism, media influence, and societal norms, often challenging conventional perceptions through a deliberately provocative and unconventional aesthetic.

Bischof's use of found objects, altered photographs, and distorted imagery reflects a deliberate blending of high art with everyday visual culture. His distinctive approach, marked by a bold use of color and form, serves as a critique of contemporary life and the art world itself. Through his exploration of the absurd, Bischof pushes the boundaries between the serious and the trivial, offering a complex commentary on the state of modern society. His work has been exhibited internationally, gaining recognition for its incisive, often subversive approach to cultural critique.

In 2005, he began publishing his own self-made zine, titled Laser magazine, to distribute his drawings, collages and texts. He continues to release new issues at irregular intervals, in small editions. In addition to this, Beni Bischof has made other notable publications, such as Bambi (2017), Rambo (2016) and the iconic Psychobuch (2014). The latter offers a comprehensive overview of his artistic career.
