Exhibition text
≪Para-Jagi≫ begins with the awareness of the resemblance between truth and falsehood, and the fragility of human perception as Michel Eyquem de Montaigne notes in 『Les Essais』. What the case of Martin Guerre reveals is not the failure of decision, but the fact that the boundary between truth and falsehood is itself always unstable. This exhibition reflects on the instability through the prefix ‘Para- ‘. ‘Para- ‘refers to a condition of being alongside and existing together, while also disobeying and resisting. This condition cannot be contained within any single category yet performs nearly the same force and effect. It is an imitation that operates as original, that remains outside while functioning as if it’s inside. Meanwhile, Korean ‘Jagi’ can refer both to oneself and to another, which implies that we never exist only as a singular, fixed self. ‘Jagi’ can be formed through relations and layers and cannot fully converge into one unified self. Para-Jagi suggests the possibility of imitation operating as original, and truth and falsehood functioning the same way. Rather than declaring that the boundaries have disappeared, the exhibition insists that the borders are still working. We may repeatedly cross over the border even as we continue to recognize it.
